eSIM Technical Overview

The components that make embedded SIM technology work

Hardware Layer

eUICC Chip

The embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card is permanently soldered to the device motherboard. Certified to CC EAL4+. Stores multiple carrier profiles simultaneously.

Server Layer

SM-DP+ Server

Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus. Operated by carriers. Prepares and delivers encrypted profile packages via HTTPS to the device eUICC.

Discovery Layer

SM-DS Service

Subscription Manager Discovery Service. Connects devices to the correct SM-DP+ server. Enables SGP.22 compliant profile downloads without pre-configured server addresses.

Activation Sequence

The technical steps from QR code to active connection

STEP_01 / VERIFY
Device Compatibility Check
Confirm eUICC hardware present. Verify carrier unlock status. Check iOS/Android version compatibility. Navigate Settings > Cellular for "Add eSIM" option.
STEP_02 / CONNECT
Wi-Fi Connection Required
Profile download requires stable internet connection. Airport Wi-Fi acceptable. Mobile data from existing SIM also works. Minimum 1 Mbps recommended.
STEP_03 / DOWNLOAD
QR Code Scan and Profile Download
Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Device contacts SM-DP+ server. Encrypted profile package downloaded to eUICC. Duration: 2–5 minutes.
STEP_04 / ACTIVATE
Enable Data Roaming
Settings > Cellular > [eSIM line] > Data Roaming: ON. Set as default data line. Restart device if connection not established within 60 seconds of arrival.

// FAQ

What is AlrleSIM?
AlrleSIM is an independent technical resource on eSIM architecture and European connectivity. No commercial affiliations. No carrier relationships. Pure information.
What is the SGP.22 standard?
SGP.22 is the GSMA's Remote SIM Provisioning specification for consumer devices. It defines the protocols for downloading, activating, and managing eSIM profiles. All consumer eSIM devices must comply with this standard.
How secure is eSIM compared to physical SIM?
The eUICC is certified to Common Criteria EAL4+, which is a higher security certification than most physical SIM cards. Profile downloads are encrypted end-to-end. Physical theft of the chip is impossible without destroying the device.
Can I transfer an eSIM to a new device?
eSIM profiles are typically bound to a specific device's eUICC. Transfer policies vary by carrier. Some carriers allow re-download to a new device; others require purchasing a new plan. Check your carrier's policy before device replacement.
